Why we built AEGORA
It started with a simple frustration.
The idea for AEGORA began with two things happening at almost exactly the same time.
John and Natalie were looking at European property from Australia and discovering just how difficult it could be to navigate a market thousands of kilometres away.
At the same time, John came across a post in an online Greek property community from someone living overseas who desperately wanted to sell her property in Greece.
Then came a sentence that stopped him:
"Oh, how I would love to find a buyer here somewhere in the US to pay me here."
That was the lightning bolt.
Not because there was anything inherently wrong with the Greek property market.
Every country has its own way of doing business, its own systems, customs and expectations. What feels perfectly normal to someone living locally can feel remarkably unfamiliar to someone trying to transact from another country.
And when you're dealing with a property worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, familiarity matters.
Familiar processes.
Familiar communication.
Familiar expectations.
Familiar market context.
Trusted connections.
The comfort of dealing with people and systems you understand.
John and Natalie had experienced that discomfort themselves.
Searching overseas websites could mean dealing with listings that were difficult to verify, duplicated or dated, navigating unfamiliar processes and sometimes being passed between local markets and agents when what they really wanted was a straightforward connection to European property from Australia.
So John started looking for a marketplace that worked the other way around.
Not an overseas property portal aimed at locals.
An Australian marketplace for Australians connected to property in Europe.
He couldn't find one.
And that's when AEGORA began.
Then we asked ourselves a different question.
Why should an Australian buyer have to leave their familiar market and navigate an unfamiliar one simply because the property happens to be overseas?
If a seller genuinely wants to reach an Australian buyer, why shouldn't the opportunity come to the buyer instead?
The property can be overseas. The marketplace doesn't have to be.
That became another important part of the idea behind AEGORA: bringing European property into an Australian-facing environment, where Australians can discover, compare and enquire from home.
The same story, in different forms.
What initially looked like one person's problem kept appearing in different forms.
A family member wanting to sell apartments in Greece. An Australian property owner wanting to sell European property while keeping the proceeds in Europe for future holidays. An older client owning property in Sicily and facing the growing difficulty of managing it from Australia.
Australians who had inherited European property. Australians considering buying, renting, retiring or spending extended periods in Europe.
The examples kept coming.
The common thread wasn't simply the property. It was the distance between the person and the market in which that property existed.
Sometimes the problem isn't finding the property.
It's finding a way to deal with the property that feels familiar.
AEGORA was created to help bridge that gap.
European property. Australian connection.
AEGORA is a marketplace and does not itself provide legal, tax, finance, foreign exchange or settlement services. The story above is shared in good faith to explain the origin of the platform and is not a statement about any particular overseas market, agency or jurisdiction.
